Did you watch Obama?s latest speech on healthcare reform? If so, did it change your opinion of the current health reform proposal (H.R.3200)? Some analysts felt that the speech had great ideas but still lacked details. Additionally, Obama seems to vilify opponents of his plan. Just because a person opposes this particular health reform plan, they may not necessarily oppose health reform in general. In fact, many Republicans and other opponents of H.R.3200 actually WANT some form of health reform, and agree that health reform is paramount to our future. Additionally, many people are still wondering: how do you add coverage for 45 million additional people, while providing better quality of care, for less money?
The Republican response to President Obama's speech was delivered by Dr. Charles Boustany, a Louisiana Representative and former cardio-thoracic surgeon. Dr. Boustany lamented the lack of bipartisanship, as well as the $500 Billion in Medicare cuts, and the billions of dollars in tax increases. Boustany implored the President to work with Republicans to develop and implement "common sense reform" that is more affordable than the current proposal. Dr. Boustany's remarks stood out because he seems to be one of the few speakers to have actually read the bill, and he included specific facts and anecdotes from his medical career.
Of course, people who already agree with the current H.R.3200 reform bill probably still support it. But did his speech gain any new supporters?Did Obama's Speech Change Your Opinion on Health Reform?Source: www.about.com
