Health Tips for December 31

Health Tip: New Year's Safety for People and PetsNew Year's Eve is a night to have fun and celebrate the coming year. However, safety is a must when participating in the festivities. Whether you're staying in and celebrating with friends and family, or you're traveling to a party or city bash, following a few safety tips will ensure that you're safe and sound when the clock strikes midnight, ringing in 2010!If you're driving, be aware of your surroundings. New Year's Eve is notorious for drunk driving, and the best way to keep you and your loved ones safe, is to know where you're at and be alert while behind the wheel. If you're drinking, leave the keys with a designated driver. If you don't have a designated driver, call a taxi. If you're attending a party at someone else's home, leave your keys with the host. If you're the hostess, provide a bowl at the door where guests can put their keys before the party begins. This way, you can ensure no one leaves your home while intoxicated. Also remember: buzz driving is drunk driving. If you're burning candles, incense or oil burners, remember to extinguish them before you turn in or before you leave the room they are burning in.Be sure smoke alarms are working and batteries are up to date. If you are hosting a New Year's party, this is a safety measure that is essential, especially if you are cooking. Be sure you change the batteries a few days before your party so you are sure all smoke alarms are in working order. If you're attending a party in a larger city, or where there are crowds, travel with a group or in pairs. With the festivities in full force around you, traveling with someone else will ensure you are never by yourself at any time. The last thing you want is to get lost in the midst of thousands of people and have to ring in the New Year by yourself. If you are letting off fireworks in a residential area, be sure to practice proper safety precautions when using them. Let off fireworks in a field or other open area where homes and power lines are out of site. Have a fire extinguisher nearby and never try to re-light a firework that did not go off when first lit. Also, be sure pets and children are at a safe distance from where fireworks are being ignited. Finally, always have an adult present when using any type of firework. New Year's Eve Pet Safety TipsNew Year's Eve is a great time for everyone to celebrate the coming of a new year and the memories of the old. Thought filled with celebration and fun for humans, it can often be a rough night for a lot of animals. Below are some things to keep in mind while you celebrate this wonderful event! 1. Be observant of your animal's response to loud noises. Thunderstorms and fireworks are the best known causes for pet anxiety, but celebration party favors and popping champagne corks can be just as traumatizing. If you are hosting a New Year's Party, make sure your pets are placed in a comfortable area that is separate from the activities. Make sure they have plenty of water and are comfortable. When possible, refrain from keeping them outside, as fireworks and other neighbors celebrating can lead to the same ruckus and worry. 2. Always keep your pet's tags on. In the case they do get spooked and bolt for an open door or gate, an ID tag will be imperative to getting them home safely. 3. Beware of alcohol! Many pets can be drawn to glasses of beer or liquor that has been left behind after the celebration is over. Consumption of alcohol can be highly dangerous for animals, and even deadly. Make sure to thoroughly clean up the area before you allow your pets to enter. Always keep a close eye on them, and never give them any alcohol as a treat or joke. 4. Be aware of party decorations. Balloons, streamers, party hats or confetti can be unhealthy for an animal if ingested. While decorating for your party, keep the animals in a separate area where they do not have access to the decorations. If they do get into them, consult a veterinarian immediately. Heart Transplant Gives Girl More Possibilities in New Year

Shelley Effert was at a Brewers game with her husband, Derek, and a couple of friends this summer -- "Our first date night in forever," she said -- when she got the call.

Her daughter's new heart was ready, and the Efferts had an hour and a half to get to the hospital for the transplant.

So Shelley and Derek scrambled to their Brookfield home to pick up 7-year-old Miranda and take her to Children's Hospital in Wauwatosa. The doctors wheeled Miranda away to the operating room, and the Efferts didn't see their daughter for another 16 hours.

Now, four months later, Miranda is off of oxygen for only the second time in her life, and she's getting ready to head back to school a few days a week.

Not bad for a kid who had her first open-heart surgery when she was five days old and who was declared terminal by doctors when she was 2 1/2 .

24 surgeries since birth

Medical procedures are nothing new to the Effert family: Shelley, Derek, Miranda, 6-year-old Vaughn and 5-year-old Aaron.

Miranda was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, meaning the left side of her heart did not develop correctly, leaving Miranda with essentially half a heart. Her first open-heart surgery was followed by another just four months later.

Miranda, who is in her second year in Dixon Elementary School's special education program, suffered brain damage due to the lack of oxygen to her brain and has undergone 24 surgeries since she was born.

Two and a half years ago, she lost the function of her left lung.

Shelley said doctors started transplant testing on Miranda about two years ago "because her body was getting tired." This February, she was put on the heart transplant list as a very high-risk patient.

After the surgery, Miranda's chest was left open for five days so the swelling caused by the operation could go down. While the sight was too much for some people, Shelley was fascinated.

"We got to watch her new, beautiful heart beat," she said.

Shelley doesn't know who the heart came from, only that it was from a little girl who was slightly older than Miranda.

"We'd love to thank them for the beautiful gift they gave our family," Shelley said.

[page]
With her new heart, Miranda has grown nearly 3 inches, gained eight pounds and increased a full shoe size. She's also using oxygen only at bedtime now, instead of having to tote a full tank everywhere, Shelley said.

While her family has faced its share of adversity, Shelley's faith has kept her grounded.

"Honestly, I would not trade what God gave us," Shelley said. "Everybody hopes and wishes they have a healthy child, but I would not change anything."

Community shows support

The Efferts also have been blessed with extensive support from friends, family and the community.

"We would not have been able to do it without everybody's help," Shelley said.

Kris Wilson met Shelley when both their children were in Dixon's 4-year-old kindergarten class.

"Your heart just goes out to them, and you want to help them any way you can," Wilson said. "How can you stand there and not do something?"

After hearing that the Efferts had been burglarized twice in two months last year, Wilson got in touch with staff members at Dixon, who in turn got in touch with a construction company that installed two new doors at the Efferts' home.

Dixon also provided the Efferts with presents for the kids and gift cards.

Brookfield Elementary School and Brookfield Lutheran Church have chipped in, too, donating food and household items to the family. Members of Brookfield Lutheran made meals for the Efferts two times a week after Miranda's surgery, and Dixon parents and staff members also brought some meals to the Efferts' home.

At the end of last school year, Dixon and Brookfield Elementary held a coin war, with all the proceeds going to the Efferts.

"I can't tell you how great of a community we have," Wilson said.

Reached by phone a week before Christmas, Wilson said she had just picked up gifts an anonymous donor left for the Effert kids at Dixon.

[page]

"That's just a true testament to human nature," Wilson said. "Everyone wanted to get involved as soon as they heard the story."

2nd transplant likely needed

What's next for Miranda?

The first year after a transplant is the riskiest, so Miranda will continue to be monitored over the next several months, Shelley said. The good news is that all three biopsies done since the transplant have shown no signs of rejection.

Miranda will probably need another heart transplant, but nobody knows exactly when that will be necessary -- it could be another five or 10 years, her mom said.

"She needs to start living her life now," Shelley said. "She's got a new big-girl heart."

For now, Miranda is enjoying her life at home, and her family is ecstatic she's out of the hospital and doing well.

"She is a miracle right here," Shelley says, her face beaming.

She turns to Miranda, who is engrossed by her hand-held video game.

"God has plans for you," Shelley says. "We don't know what they are, but He's got them."

Can you join the military as a nurse if you go to a online nursing school?

I am considering going to a local community college to get a degree in nursing (RN) and I was then planing on going to a online only or advanced pace school like University of Phoenix (or similar school) to receive my BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) which is required to join as a military nurse. Will this work or will I have to go the long way around and go to a 4 year school to be a military nurse?
I know all nursing requires a BSN and they are all officers. I just want to make sure my plan works. I am not totally set on joining yet. I want to finish school first.
Marine5 would you care to back that up? I am looking at specifically the air force nursing program.
A RN from a community college and from a 4 year school are the same. The BSN (in the civilian world) is only needed if you want to move up from just basic nursing to management. The military only wants nurses with a BSN which can be achieved by going to a school that issues BSNs. I want to go to a CC and get my RN then get my BSN (either from UoP or other such accredited school) to join the military. I am looking for facts only, not opinion. If you can show me something that says yay or nay on my plan then do.

Health Headlines - December 29

Beef Recalled Because of E. Coli Concerns Concerns about contamination with a strain of E. coli bacteria have led an Oklahoma-based company to voluntarily recall about 248,000 pounds of beef. On its Web site, National Steak and Poultry says the beef products "could potentially be implicated in an outbreak" of illnesses related to E. coli, the Associated Press reported. This is the first recall in the firm's 30-year history, it said. The U.S. Agriculture Department's Food Safety and Inspection Service noticed a link between non-intact steaks and a cluster of illnesses in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, South Dakota and Washington, the AP said. Non-intact steaks include cuts that have been injected with flavoring or tenderized, processes that allow surface bacteria to get inside the beef. The E. coli strain has caused large-scale outbreaks of potentially deadly illness. ----- Brain Blood Flow Controlled by Inner Ear: Study A Harvard Medical School team has determined that the inner ear does more than control balance. Tiny organs deep within the ear also appear to alter blood flow to the brain, the researchers say. From their study of 24 people, they concluded that this connection may have enabled early man to stand upright and still get blood pumped to the brain, the BBC said. Using NASA tests designed for astronauts, the researchers assessed the balance organs, which are located deep inside bony chambers of the ear, and monitored blood flow through the body while the participants were tilting and spinning. They reported their findings in the journal BMC Neuroscience, according to the BBC. Dr. Jorge Serrador, who led the team, said the findings could potentially lead to new treatments for related conditions. For example, people who suffer from postural hypotension -- meaning they faint or get dizzy spells when they stand up too quickly -- might have poor brain blood flow related to an underlying inner ear problem, he said. ----- New Guidelines Sought for Diseased Organ Donors U.S. health experts are rethinking guidelines for kidney donors because of a brain infection that two transplant patients developed after receiving their new organs. The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson recently revealed that the child donor had a rare, often fatal infection that was not diagnosed until after the transplant, The New York Times reported. Before the surgery, it was thought the child had a brain disorder caused by a nontransmissible autoimmune disease. Dr. Michael G. Ison, chairman of an advisory committee on infectious disease transmission for the United Network for Organ Sharing, which coordinates U.S. transplants, said the cases point out the need for a national policy governing donations from people with undefined neurological conditions. Currently, those decisions are left to transplant centers. Ison's committee has begun studying nationwide data to see how many other similar patients have become donors, the Times said. In 1 percent of cases, organ donors transmit diseases, including West Nile virus, rabies, HIV, tuberculosis and even cancer, the organ network says. More than 100,000 people are waiting for a transplant, the Times noted. "This is a difficult topic, because organs are really scarce and patients who need a transplant are typically quite ill and need a transplant quickly, and sometimes it's hard to do all the testing that one could possibly think of for all the infections out there," said Dr. Eileen Farnon, an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ----- Extremely Drug-Resistant TB Diagnosed in Florida The first case of extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis in the United States was diagnosed in a teenager living in Florida. The illness, discovered in a 19-year-old Peruvian, was not made public until it turned up in an investigation of global drug resistance by the Associated Press. Health officials have long feared the emergence of an aggressive, contagious strain of TB, the top infectious killer of adults worldwide. Forty years ago, it was thought that the development of powerful antibiotics heralded the end of TB, but overuse and misuse of those drugs has contributed to this virulent strain. Known as extremely drug-resistant (XXDR) TB, it has never before been seen in the United States, Dr. David Ashkin, an expert on tuberculosis, told the AP. "This is the new class that people are not really talking too much about," Ashkin said. "These are the ones we really fear because I'm not sure how we treat them." TB lies dormant in one in three people, according to the World Health Organization. Dr. Masae Kawamura, head of the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center in San Francisco, called the XXDR form of TB "a time bomb." Health Headlines - December 29

Health Headlines - December 30

Moldy Smell Prompts Recall of Tylenol Arthritis Caplets Consumer complaints about a moldy smell and gastrointestinal side effects from Tylenol Arthritis Caplets have led McNeil Consumer Healthcare to expand its voluntary recall of the 100-count bottles. The New Jersey-based company announced the recall of all product lots of the Arthritis Pain Caplet 100-count bottles with the red EZ-Open Cap after reports of a moldy or musty smell that might cause vomiting, stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. The odor comes from trace amounts of a chemical called 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, which is created by the breakdown of another chemical used to treat wooden pallets that carry packaging materials, according to a McNeil statement. Not much is known about the health effects of this compound, but none of the side effects reported to McNeil were long-lasting or serious, the company said. Consumers who bought the 100-count bottles with the EZ-Open red cap from the lots included in the recall can contact McNeil for instructions on a refund or replacement at 1-888-222-6036 or www.tylenol.com. Contact your doctor if you have medical concerns, the company advises. In 1982, seven people in the Chicago area died after taking Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules that had been poisoned with potassium cyanide. The case was never solved, but it led to new guidelines for packaging over-the-counter products. ----- Music Therapy May Help Tinnutis A novel form of music therapy may offer hope for people with chronic tinnutis, a constant ringing in the ears. German researchers say the treatment could be used with other strategies to relieve the condition, which currently has no cure, according to the BBC. It's said that up to 3 percent of the population have tinnutis severe enough to disrupt their quality of life. Using the participants' favorite music, the researchers removed notes that matched the frequency of the ringing in their ears. After listening to the altered music for a year, the 39 participants reported that their tinnitus had quieted. "The theory behind the new technique is that removing the spectrum of noise associated with tinnitus from the music reduces activity in the brain relating to that frequency, alleviating the condition," the BBC said. The findings were reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. ----- Beef Recalled Because of E. LVN, LPN Nursing Careers

LVN, LPN Nursing Careers
Tuesday December 29, 2009
Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) are projected to be among the top 30 fastest-growing occupations over the next ten years, and the top six most in-demand health careers. Therefore, it's a great time to look into this nursing career that requires only about one year of education after completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.

If you are interested in a nursing career, becoming an LVN or LPN can offer a great opportunity to grow into more advanced nursing careers if you desire, with programs such as an LVN to BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) program. Due to the relatively lower barrier of entry, LVN/LPNs are typically not paid quite as high as registered nurses (RN). However, you can choose to further advance your career at a later date with additional coursework and degrees, if you decide that you want to earn more and be eligible for higher-level nursing roles.

How do I approach my girlfriend about losing weight?

When I met my girlfriend 2 years ago, she was 5'6, 132 lbs. After dating for a while, she got a job as a nurse. Her schedule is so hectic now, working and going to school part time. She has no time to eat cooked and eat healthy meals so now she eats out of the vending machines and fast food restuarants. My girlfriend started gaining so much weight now, 28 lbs to be exact. I'm in love with her and I'm not going to break up with her cause she gained a couple of pounds. But I prefer her slim. I tried to get her to go to the gym with me but she always wants to spend her free time lying in bed. She does work hard. I brought us some bikes and she started riding for a month but again she says she's too tired to keep it up and she stopped. In my line of duty, I have to stay in excellent health. I wish she would too. How can I tell her to lose some weight without making her think I don't love her anymore?

who do you call when you suspect someone of nursing home abuse?

I suspect that my Girlfriends mother is abusing the elderly residents at the nursing home she works at. Not only that I think she might be stealing medication from the nursing home to feed her and her husbands rather large drug habit.
I don't know if i should call the police or not
My Girlfriend is estranged from her mother, so i don't know the name of the nursing home. but some stuff has been going on, and my girlfriends grandfather said something along the lines of she molests the older people... what can i do?

Any hospital that offers loan repayment if you work for them?

I am going to nursing school and looking around, I am willing to move.
tuition reimbursement and loan repayment is not the same thing. With tuition reimbursement you have to already be working for the hospital before you start the nursing program. Loan repayment is where you start working for them out of college.

What does IT jobs have to do with a nursing job??

Medical School Admissions Requirements And Logical Preparation For A Potential Doctor

You may have a dream to become a doctor but before you get there you will need to complete medical school. Finding out what medical school admissions requirements are long before you are ready to apply will help you get there and be ready for when it is time to send in applications and hold interviews.

A typical school will run your application through their computer when they get it to ensure that your GPA and your MCAT qualify for their minimum standards of admissions. From there they will look at your portfolio and details of you. You will want to have a good portfolio that represents you well so they can see who you are.

The area that you apply yourself most in for preparation of your med school interview will be important. You will be telling the admissions board why should be accepted. You will also be trying to tell them how great you are.

Your basic course work for all medical schools will consist of classes that you should have already taken. This includes general biology, physics with lab, and general chemistry with lab, organic chemistry with lab, calculus and English. Expect to complete all of these classes and you will be in good standing with most schools.

Your grade point average should be a 3. 5 or above for most schools as the minimum. This is indicative to the United States and strictly adhered to for the competition to get in. It is very rigorous being in med school and a dedication to grades is important for your success in school and it shows in your undergraduate work.

Your MCAT is extremely important for your medical school entrance. You will need to know the deadlines for taking the exam and also how to prepare for them. You can take preparedness classes ahead of time which include practice tests to ensure that you get the best score possible.

Getting a science four year degree is not as important as majoring in something you enjoy very much. If you dedicate four years to study a subject make it something you love. Some schools look negatively on a science degree. They want to see a complete person who has different interests.

Many optional items are also available to do while you are preparing for applying to medical school. You can shadow a physician and gain realistic experience. You can also do volunteer work not only for your portfolio but because it is good to give back to the community. You can also participate in research. Also check with specific school admission requirements as they are all different.

If you want to learn more about medical school admissions requirements, you should go to the website here in the resource box and get a medical school interview.

Newsworthy Medical Stories of the Decade

As the decade comes to a close, we take a look at some of the more newsworthy medical stories of the past 10 years.

Most of them -- the first flu pandemic in 40 years, heightened concerns about drug and food safety -- will continue to play out in the next decade, while the full effect of others -- the sequencing of the human genome in 2003, President Obama's lifting this year of restrictions on stem cell research -- won't be felt for years or even decades.

On the next page: A far-from-comprehensive list->

SARS leads to global coordination

Severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, hit Southeast Asia and Canada in 2003. Worldwide, the atypical pneumonia killed more than 750 people and led to the quarantine of tens of thousands. The outbreak ended in 2004 and led to the adoption in 2005 of international health regulations designed to speed communication about outbreaks of serious, unusual diseases.

Hormone therapy trial halted

For years, doctors had prescribed postmenopausal hormone therapy in the belief it would protect women against diseases of aging. In July 2002, though, the government-sponsored Women's Health Initiative halted a trial comparing estrogen plus progestin to a placebo. Women on the hormones had a higher risk of breast cancer, heart attacks, stroke and blood clots. In 2004, the initiative stopped comparing estrogen alone with a placebo because the hormone group had a higher stroke risk. Women were advised to take the hormones only for hot flashes.

Vioxx opens eyes to other dangers

The blockbuster arthritis drug Vioxx became the poster child for drug safety concerns when maker Merck ended five years of sales Sept. 30, 2004. A company study had found that patients on Vioxx were more likely to have heart attacks or strokes than those on a placebo. Six weeks later, Food and Drug Administration scientist David Graham told Senate panel members the agency was "virtually defenseless" against another Vioxx. Graham named five medications he thought might deserve Vioxx's fate. In April 2005, Pfizer agreed to halt sales of one, the arthritis drug Bextra, because risks outweighed benefits.

Sickness in the food supply

Over the decade, thousands became sick and some died from eating contaminated food, shaking consumers' faith in the FDA's ability to keep the food supply safe. In 2006, E. coli-tainted spinach sickened 205; five died. In 2008, more than 1,400 were sickened by salmonella-tainted tomatoes and jalapeno and serrano peppers. This past January, the FDA launched a recall of products from a Georgia peanut plant because of salmonella. Hundreds got sick after eating the products; several died.

First cancer vaccine approved

Merck's Gardasil, the first vaccine designed to protect against cancer, earned FDA approval in June 2006 for girls and women 9 to 26. It targets the types of human papillomavirus, or HPV, accountable for 70% of cervical cancers and 90% of genital warts. Some states considered mandating Gardasil for girls entering middle school, even though HPV is sexually transmitted. In October, the FDA approved GlaxoSmithKline's Cervarix HPV vaccine for girls and young women. Merck got the nod to market Gardasil for boys and young men. Get In By Medical School Personal Statement

Medical school has been on your mind. As more and more strive to find what careers they want to go into, many want to pursue a career as a medical doctor. Yet, you have to get the schooling to do that. Part of getting into any medical school is to do your medical school personal statement.

How do you write the personal statement? This should tell them a lot about you. This is your chance to speak up and get somewhere with your hopes and dreams. Yet, you might wonder how you do this. Here are some key components to making any medical school personal statement stick out.

The first thing you need to show them is that you are serious about the medical field. Show them where your influence began. For some they read about stuff. For some it was a parent or family member and has been instilled in them. For others, it is because they were saved by the field that they want to study. Tell them what prompted you.

When you write these, you are somewhat answering some of the questions in the medical school interview in which you will go through. One thing they are going to ask you is how you use your gifts to benefit others. You should be doing this someway whether it is volunteering to work or by simply giving some time to the nursing home. You do not even have to be really practicing your medical skills. It could be working at a food bank. They want to see you active in helping others.

The next thing that you want to include is some of the things you do on the outside. Doctors are human. You don. 't think about healing people one hundred percent of the time. They understand this. Therefore, what you aim to do is then show to them what you also excel in. This shows that you can handle stress as well.

You want this to sound as personal as you can make it. Besides your GPA they are going to be looking at a whole bunch of other things. You need to be ready to amuse them and have them fall in love with you as it is hard getting in. When you do this, you up your chances. Then you will be sure to have it.

There is one more thing that you need to include. This shows them where you are going. You need to explain your plan to them. Where do you see yourself after you graduate? Where, when, working with who in what field. All of this should be answered because it says you are going somewhere one way or another.

All of this should be included. When you do include this, then you are well on your way to having a personal essay that rocks their socks. It is something to give them an idea of your character. It shows them your way of speaking. It tells them that you are willing to jump through hoops and more to make it big.

Medical school has been your ambition. Part of getting into any medical school is to do your medical school personal statement. More information on personal statement medical school, a click away!

Health Headlines - December 28

Seniors' Flu Vaccine Approved by FDAFluzone High-Dose, a seasonal flu vaccine for people 65 and older, has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the agency said in a news release.Seniors are at highest risk for complications of seasonal flu, including hospitalization and death. The Fluzone High-Dose vaccine, designed to prevent infection with influenza subtypes A and B, was given accelerated approval as a product designed to prevent serious or life-threatening disease. As part of the approval, manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur is required to "conduct further studies to verify that [the vaccine] will decrease seasonal influenza after vaccination," the FDA said.Because of the vaccine's higher potency, mild side effects were reported more frequently compared with Sanofi's standard-strength Fluzone vaccine, the agency said. These included pain, injection-site redness and swelling, headache, muscle ache and fever.People who are sensitive to egg products or who have had life-threatening reactions to prior flu shots shouldn't be vaccinated with Fluzone High-Dose, the FDA said.-----Teresa Heinz, Battling Cancer, Supports Regular MammogramsTeresa Heinz, wife of the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, Sen. John Kerry, is undergoing treatment for breast cancer and is urging younger women to continue getting regular mammograms despite recent federal guidelines recommending they get fewer of the cancer-detecting tests. In an interview with the Associated Press, Heinz, 71, said the physical and emotional toll of the disease for women who need surgery and other follow-up treatment, such as chemotherapy, is far greater than the cost of mammography. Her cancer was detected during an annual mammogram in late September, she said.Heinz underwent lumpectomies in October and November, the first for what was thought to be a benign growth in her right breast, the second after the tumor was confirmed to be malignant. She is advising other women to get tested in the wake of last month's controversial recommendation from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force that women postpone the start of mammograms to age 50, rather than starting at 40, as has been customary. The task force recommendations were criticized by many medical and women's organizations, and the government later backed down and said its policies "remain unchanged."Heinz's treatment will include five days of targeted radiation starting next month, which could boost the odds of successful treatment to 95 percent, the AP said. She said she remains undecided about subsequent follow-up treatment.-----Texas Must Destroy 5 Million Blood Specimens From BabiesMore than five million blood samples taken from babies without parental permission will be destroyed by Texas health authorities early next year following settlement of a lawsuit. The blood specimens, stored indefinitely for scientific research, were the subject of a lawsuit filed by the Texas Civil Rights project on behalf of five plaintiffs, theAssociated Press reported. The suit against the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas A&M University System argued that their failure to obtain parental consent violated constitutional protections against unlawful search and seizure. The parents feared their children's private health information would be misused.About 5.3 million samples would be destroyed, said a state health services spokeswoman. For decades, Texas has collected blood specimens to screen for birth defects and diseases. Last May, the state placed some restrictions on the procedures, giving parents the right to refuse and instituting controls over the research that can use the specimens. The lawsuit involves the samples collected prior to the new law.If parents agree, the health department can still use the blood samples for disease research, the AP said.-----No Proof of Vytorin Cancer Link: FDAAn extensive data review of the cholesterol drug Vytorin turned up no evidence that the drug causes cancer, federal drug regulators say.Following up on concerns raised by a patient study last year, the Food and Drug Administration examined all of the data from that study and reviewed available information from two ongoing large studies, the Associated Press reported. But whether Vytorin, which is made by Merck & Co., is linked to a higher risk of cancer or death from cancer cannot definitively be ruled out, the FDA said.Vytorin combines two types of cholesterol pills, Zetia and Zocor.Health Headlines - December 28

Donating Used College Textbooks?

I was interested in donating several college textbooks is subjects such as nursing, science and software engineering. These books are in good to very good condition, but the campus bookstore would not buy them back for one reason or another. (usually because they changed to a new edition) A few have some high lighting but aside from that the pages are very clean and the covers are in good condition as well. I live in Florida and I can't seem to find any location in Florida that accepts used textbook donations.

What are the rules about working as a medical assistant position if one is a registered nurse?

I live in the state of Washington, and I am a registered nurse. For personal reasons, I am no longer interested in being a nurse. I wanted to apply for a Medical Assistant job at a local Planned Parenthood to get some money to go back to school. However, the person doing the hiring informed me that she thinks the state of Washington will not allow someone to work below their level of license. Is this true and could someone point me to a website regarding the rules about this? Thanks.

Is it possible to have family member committed to nursing home against their will?

Hi, my wife and I care for a 42 year old son that has juvenile diabetes, bi-polar, and schizophrenia. He has had wounds on the heels of his feet that have not healed He almost lost his right leg a month ago due to an infection but the surgeon did surgery and removed the infection but in the process had to sever his tendon. He is going to be bedridden for at least 3 months and his mother and I are his care givers. Most of the burden falls on his mother. I try to help as best I can. He is very, very demanding and verbally abuses his mother throughout the day and night. You can't do enough for him. Actually, this is nothing new. The verbal abuse and demands have been there for years and years. The difference is he is now bedridden. I can't tell you how awful it is for his mother and to live in this home. He receives SSI and medi-cal (medicaid). We don't have any additional money to pay for his care somewhere outside the home. Also, I know him, he will never voluntarily go somewhere outside the home where he can be cared for. My question is, is there anywhere that he can receive the proper care for his situation with his resources and how can we get him there when he won't voluntarily go?

Health Reform - What's Next?

Health Reform - What's Next?
Friday December 25, 2009
Forbes.com: "Change is not guaranteed."
This week the Senate passed its version of the health reform bill, with an extremely rare Christmas Eve vote of 60 to 39.

Health reform has been a hot topic all week, not only in the news media, but also on Main Street and at holiday gatherings, as patients and healthcare professionals watch, wait, and wonder what will happen next. Many people have lots of questions about what health reform will look like once it's implemented, including how it will affect them as a patient, a taxpayer, and in some cases, as a healthcare professional or a business owner.

It's a bit too early to tell precisely how health reform will ultimately look, since currently there are two very different bills in the House and Senate. The House version and the Senate's version must be reconciled into one bill, passed in another vote in the House and Senate, and then signed into law by President Obama. Forbes.com predicts that reconciling the two versions of the health reform bill into one could be the "most delicate part of the process."

Meanwhile, this Forbes.com article breaks down many of the issues and questions including which health reform bill has a public option (House bill), who will pay for health reform (you will), how will employers and businesses be impacted, and who are the winners and losers when health reform is ultimately passed?

If you have questions about health reform, you may want to check it out. Then, feel free to share your thoughts on health reform below, or along with these other reader responses about health reform.Health Reform - What's Next?Source: www.about.com

Commercial Diving Courses

Professional deep sea diving or commercial diving is a profession that is not for all people. In this profession, you must be in first-class physical condition and you also need to have a quick mind. Being a commercial diver is not only about knowing how to weld pipes undersea and being able to handle explosives, there are a lot of specialty studies that you can focus on in commercial diving.

These days, there are specialized schools for commercial diving. There, you will get the chance to develop into a qualified commercial diver as well as take specialty courses that appeal to you the most.

On the whole, most commercial divers take welding classes. If you take the specialist undersea welding course, you will learn the skills required to make high quality fillet welds. You will also be introduced to theories concerning the welding process and safe working practice while welding undersea.

In this course, each issue will be covered with lectures and real test situations where you will be taken underwater for a simulated welding situation.Normally, you will learn nine special subjects on this course.

The first will cover safe undersea welding procedures; the second, welding plant and equipment; the third, techniques; the fourth, the preparation of the weld; the fifth, welding terminology and electrodes; the sixth, basic weldability and common weld defects; the seventh, how to monitor and control welding operations; the eighth, quality assurance and control and the ninth is joining steel plates using the three regular welding techniques.

Taking an undersea welding course can provide you with a great deal of employment opportunities in a commercial diving career. By becoming a certified undersea welder, you will be in demand by the shipping, construction and oil and gas industries.

Air mixed gas commercial diving is also a specialist course in the commercial diving industry. On this one, you will be taught about the different gas mixes that divers breathe. Regular air, nitrox, trimix, whatever, you will be taught how to mix them all.

A pressure tolerance test is also included in this exacting course. You will also be taught about the effects of certain gases on the body when diving. For instance, you will be taught about nitrogen and its hallucinogenic effects on the brain when inhaled under pressure, and you will also be taught about oxygen toxicity and why helium is a preferred gas for breathing when diving in very deep seas.

You will also be taught about decompression and dive medicines as well as hyperbaric medication. Safety planning is another critical part of the course as well as the commercial applications of scuba.

Undersea construction is also covered under this course as well as inland diving and apparatus maintenance, particularly that of the gas systems.

The diver medic expert is another specialized course in commercial diving. After passing it, you will become a dive medical technician who will be responsible for making safer and better prepared dives.

You will be taught about the effects of protracted diving on the body and also about the different ailments that divers can experience, such as decompression sickness and extreme fatigue. You will also be taught how to care for divers who have experienced accidents during dives as well as hyperbaric medicine and treatment.

The above are just a few of the specialty courses that you can follow in commercial diving.

As you can tell, there are a lot of career opportunities in the world of deep sea diving. By choosing the specialty course you want to learn about, you can be sure that you will have an enjoyable and much brighter future in the world of commercial diving.
