California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, fired three out of six sitting board members of the California Board of Registered Nurses. Another board member resigned on the following Monday. His concern was the unacceptable amount of time it takes to discipline nurses who are accused of misconduct. It averages three years and five months for the board to investigate complaints made against nurses. Reporters from the Los Angeles Times found that nurses continue to work for years after having documented histories of incompetence, violence, criminal convictions and drug theft. Many nurses escape with unscathed records and continue to practice from hospital to hospital in the state. The governor has released a list of replacements for the former board members.
