Why do americans put their elderly parents in nursing homes when the rest of the world takes care of them?

In most of the world elderly parents move in with their adult children and are taken care of. Why don't americans do this? Isn't it sort of selfish to put your parents in a nursing home just so you won't have the burden of taking care of them?
