History of Labor Day Holiday
Sunday September 6, 2009
Why is Labor Day a national holiday? The Labor Day holiday certainly did not originate in the healthcare field; in fact, many clinicians do not even have the luxury of having Labor Day off. However, you may wish to explore how and why this holiday originated, especially if you are a history buff in addition to your love of the medical field.

If you are one of the fortunate Americans who is currently employed, and you do have the day off from work on Labor Day, you can thank the labor unions of New York City in the late 1800s - including carpenters, machinists, and other hard-working Americans. The holiday was created to honor the contributions of American workers have made to the "strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country," according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

The first Labor Day was celebrated over 100 years ago, on a Tuesday in September. If you'd like to learn a bit more, I've added some quick facts about the history of Labor Day.History of Labor Day HolidaySource: www.about.com
