Democrats Exploring Options After Loss of Mass. Senate Election

Health reform took a major hit today: Democrats have an uphill battle to get health reform passed and signed into law, following the victory of Republican Scott Brown in the Massachusetts special election for the Senate seat vacated by the late Ted Kennedy (D-MA).

What does this mean for the future of health care reform? While Democrats no longer have the supermajority in the Senate, they still have the majority, and they are not giving up on health reform. According to Politico.com, House leaders met behind closed doors in Speaker Pelosi's office Tuesday evening to strategize; not even staff were allowed in, according to the report.
One option is for the House to pass the Senate's health reform bill. Many think this would be the most feasible plan, but even this option would not guarantee that the Senate bill would pass the House, as there are still several fundamental differences in the bills. Any other contingency plans, such as passing the bill before Brown is seated, or forcing the bill through without the 60 votes via the reconciliation process, would probably be too controversial.Republican Senate Victory Poses Setback for Health ReformSource: www.about.com
