Those who begin preparing to be a pharmacist in high school have a distinct advantage over those who don't. They can take extra courses in subjects such as science, mathematics and social sciences. It is important for the student to learn how to use a computer well and to be able to write in a way that he can clearly express himself. Any experience that the student can get in a pharmacy, hospital or nursing home will be to his advantage when he enters pharmacy school.
There are three ways that you start your pharmacist career. Most students go to an accredited college and earn a four year degree before going on to pharmacy school. Others opt to go straight from high school into a pharmacy program known as "0-6". The other option is to go into an accelerated program.
No matter which program you enter, the school you choose must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education. Make sure that their science courses, labs and computers are the best there is available. The school should, also, be a member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.
Every pharmacy school has a list of courses that the students will need before they can enter pharmacy school. Those courses take approximately 2 years to complete at the undergraduate level. Some students go on and take 3 or 4 years of undergraduate studies instead of just the necessary 2 years.
After the first two years of undergraduate required classes are finished, the student takes the Pharmacy College Admissions Test. The next step is to turn in the application form with the information that is needed by the school. Depending on the school he is applying to, he may have to schedule an interview.
The total number of years after high school that a student has to study to become a pharmacist is six years. The last four years are spent in pharmacy school where he will earn his PharmD degree or his doctorate in pharmacy. During those four years, he will, also, complete a number of practice hours working under a licensed pharmacist.
When the student has finished his degree, he will need to take a variety of tests in order to apply for licensure or certification. Each state is different in what they require. These tests will examine the student's knowledge of pharmaceutical subjects as well as the pharmaceutical laws of the state where he will be licensed.
The outlook for jobs pharmacists is above average through 2018. One of the main reasons for this growth is the growing number of older people within the United States who require medications of some kind. The median annual wage for pharmacists is $106,410. Twenty-two percent of pharmacists nationwide make over $120,000 annually.
Gaining certification for health care as a pharmacist is not an easy task. It includes 6 years of education and numerous hours of practice. Add to that the numerous tests a student must take and pass to become licensed, and you have a highly qualified individual.
