What To Expect From A Career As A Travel Nurse

A travel nurse is a licensed health care provider who works different short term assignments that call for traveling. Travel nurses usually works with an agency that coordinates jobs for the nurse. A travel nurse can work any where from a hospital, physician's office, or even on individual assignments. These assignments usually last between six to twelve weeks depending on the needs of the person that has hired the nurse. The assignments can be shorter or longer depending on what the assignment is.

Any RN or LPN can be hired as a traveling nurse, but the nurses who specialize in ER and surgical services are the most desirable. Travel nurses receive the same training and education as the nurses who work permanently at a health care facility. All though some agencies may want a travel nurse to have clinical nursing training for a year.

Travel nurses started being used in'80, due to the shortage of nurses that were qualified. If a hospital or clinic needs to fill a position due to seasonal demands they are likely to hire a travel nurse. Some hospitals and clinics have a certain time of year that they are especially busy, they can just simply hire a travel nurse until they do not need them any longer. Travel nurses are also great for permanent positions that have yet to be filled.

There are many different benefits to becoming a travel nurse. There are many towns and cities that a travel nurse can visit while still making a wonderful living. It is up to the travel nurse how far they travel from home, and for how long they are gone on assignment. If the travel nurse becomes tired of colder climates they can simply request they be sent to a warmer climate. It would feel like working while on a vacation. There are also reimbursements for any expenses accumulated while traveling on assignment.

A travel nurse can also get reimbursed for any pets or family that may travel with them. Some nurses choose to travel with a friend in a type of couple travel nurse team. Being a travel nurse may not appeal to everyone. It would likely be hard to travel with school aged children if the nurse was a parent.

Travel nurses have housing established for them and family members they may bring on the assignment with them. Travel nurses seem to agree that another wonderful benefit is that they do not have to sign any contracts with any one health care facility, but they are still entitled to benefits and bonuses.

As with any job there are some draw backs to being a travel nurse. When traveling alone and without family it is easy to become lonely. When you are experiencing great new places and you are alone with no family to share it with, it becomes very lonely. Another draw back is that advancement options are very rare.

There are going to be draw backs and benefits to becoming a traveling nurse. You will need to decide if the benefits out weight the drawbacks before you make a decision about this. If you do decide this job is right for you I am positive that you will enjoy it.

Travel nurse jobs offer incomparable flexibility. Nurses choose their own location, compensation and such, offering them the opportunity to grow and explore. Occupational therapy jobs are also a great career for medical staffs that are looking for a balanced lifestyle.
