Susan Bumsted, president of the association, said she was standing at the front desk of the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 1616 W. Crawford, on Thursday morning when it became apparent that employees were having difficulty making a 911 call.
She said she gave them her cell phone and ran to provide emergency care to two hotel employees who had been shot. The two later were identified as Rosa M. Chavez, 41, and Charles R. Losey, 48.
"The staff said, 'We have nurses here, and that's so great,' " she said. "The hotel staff has been fabulous."
Bumsted, a registered nurse from Wichita, said nurses in the organization had concern for the victims and their families and wanted to do their part to assist. Some of the nurses attending the convention said they heard gunshots, although many were too far away from the area of the hotel where the shooting occurred.
The conference was continuing as planned in another part of the hotel.
Nurses -- many of whom work in emergency rooms -- are used to crises, Bumsted said.
The Kansas Nurses Foundation fundraising banquet Thursday evening was scheduled for the part of the hotel that police had cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape Thursday morning. A speaker at the banquet was scheduled to discuss domestic and family law.
