Hypnosis - What It Is And What It Is Not

by Ashley Cox

Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the focus of a lot of misconceptions created by popular imagination. Some consider them to be occult whereas others reject them as pseudo science. Given below are some general misconceptions prevalent about hypnosis, and the real truth behind them.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. It is a very easy technique, which can be understood easily with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after watching participants successfully undergoing it in public sessions. They hold that the people who have been under hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the influence of the practitioner. But this again is a complete fallacy. Even mentally strong people can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.

That hypnosis is an alternate state of consciousness is another myth that has been doing the rounds. A person under hypnosis does not get shut off from the outside world, but stays completely conscious of the happenings around him. That person is just in a calm state where the concentration levels are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Some researchers have concluded that hypnosis works on just 5% of the world's population, and this is another common myth. Although, the research has some shred of truth to it, what makes it empty is the fact that the scientists used the same hypnosis technique for everyone. People differ in their natures and personalities, and therefore there have to be different hypnosis techniques to fit the temperaments of different people.

Many people take hypnosis to be a variant of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and normally has no communication involved in the process. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not associated with communication in any manner, while the very crux of the hypnosis technique is communication.

A sizeable number of people believe that it is impossible to bring about changes in one's appearance and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis is obviously not wizardry that it can change the physique of a person on its own. However, it can guide the body to a healthy shape through behavioural transformations like eating less, and giving up smoking and other addictions by ensuring a high level of motivation in an individual.

If an individual falls for all the misconceptions that exist regarding hypnotherapy and doesn't venture to participate in a hypnotic session, then he will himself block his way to a better and healthier life.
