After you have qualified as a nurse at university the possibilities for your career are endless. Whilst you will need to gain experience and possibly do some further training there are many fields you can specialise in. They are all based on the three branches of nursing, of which you must study one, that you can learn at university in order to qualify to be a nurse.
General nursing involves the physical nursing of a wide range of people from adolescents through adulthood to the elderly. General nurses must have a broad knowledge of a varying array of illnesses and, as well as providing physical care, they must be able to provide emotional support to both the patient and the patients families and carers. General nurses can work in a ward based environment as well as, increasingly, in the community.

This is provided by Mental health nurses. This type of nursing can be extremely challenging, but fascinating and very rewarding at the same time. Also an important part of the job is giving support and information to relatives and friends as well as the patients themselves. A knowledge of the mental health act is also vital to enable a nurse to do his/her job properly.
Learning difficulties nursing is mainly concerned with supporting and enabling an individual with sometimes complex mental and physical problems to live as independently as possible. The nurse must, of course, take into account the level to which the individual can function in this manner.
There have been many developments in the field of aids to help people whose learning difficulty is such that they are unable to live independently. The Learning difficulties nurse must use these aids as well as other tools at her disposal to enable the client to have the best quality of life possible.
Once you have qualified and have some experience, then the worlds your oyster. You may need to do extra training to follow some career paths. But a lot of them simply require experience in your current speciality. Once you have that then there are many avenues you can take. After you have qualified and students come to your ward, it is part of your responsibility to help to teach and mentor them. It is part of the role of a nurse to educate patients, students and relatives. It is also a nurses responsibility to keep up with clinical developments and changes in the world of nursing. Educating yourself is just as important as educating others, and you never know, you might discover a passion for teaching that you never knew you had!
