Information You Need To Know Prior To Undergoing Surgery

There are very few people that aren't afraid of having to have surgery. The after effects can be very painful. You can end up with a painful incision, have to use special bandaging, and avoid getting the area wet. This can all be very overwhelming and extremely frustrating.

After a surgery the fear of infection is always present and can be very stressful. Knowing what you need to look for in order to avoid this will reduce you post-surgery stress and prevent a life altering terrible experience.

Infection: This is the biggest worry. Five hundred thousand out of every twenty-seven million surgeries end up having some sort of infection every year. This can end up being an infection at the point of incision or even in your blood. If you find yourself feeling malaise: tired, feeling like there is something wrong and down in the dumps, you may have an infection in your blood.

Whether your infection is at the site of the incision or in your blood you are most likely going to have a fever. Signs that your wound is infected are it having a hot feeling, the draining of fluid suck as pus, becoming red and a build-up of pain that increases with time.

If you find yourself having any of these signs you must immediately go to your doctor's office, the emergency room or an urgent care facility to be treated.

Hemorrhage: Bleeding a little after a surgery is in most cases to be expected. However, if you find that you bandage is very bloody and even dripping with blood you may very likely be dealing with a hemorrhage.

If this happens to be the case it is imperative that you get to your doctor's office or the emergency room immediately. On the way you need to apply constant pressure to the wound. If you fail to be seen by a professional the chances of you bleeding to death are very good.

Blood Clots: You may have a clot in you leg if you start to experience a pain that isn't normal. Clots that you get after surgeries can lead to strokes, heart attacks, and pulmonary embolism. Each of these three is life threatening situations. You must immediately see your doctor.

Nerve Complications: Surgery on a limb can cause nerve complications. This can be caused by swelling or also by a blood clot on a nerve. If this is the case you need to see your doctor to have this treated. It is not, however, an emergency issue.
