Can an elderly person in the UK be made to sell his home to pay for his wifes care in a nursing home?

My father has had to put my mother in a home, hopefully only temporarily. If she needs to stay permanently can the authorities force him to sell his home or property he owns to pay for her care in a nursing home?
It would result in him then being homeless.
