Before working as a medical recruiter, I had no idea how many different types, levels, and classifications of nurses exist in the medical field! According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 2.5 million nurses practicing in the U.S., and there are many different roles within that large group of professionals! As a medical recruiter assigned to a variety of nursing searches, I quickly had to learn about the various types of nurses and the different roles and responsibilities of each.
Nurses may be characterized by the type of patients they treat, such as pediatric nurses who specialize in caring for children, or the type of diseases they help manage, such as oncology nurses who specialize in caring for cancer patients. Nurses may also be differentiated by the location where they work, such as hospice nurses, school nurses, hospital nurses, or home care nurses. Additionally, nurses may also be specialized in a particular medical specialty. There are also different types of nursing careers based on the level of education or type of degree or certification one achieves, such as an LVN or RN.
