Barbara McDermid, 60, was arrested on charges of illegally dispensing controlled substances, practicing medicine without a license and identity theft, officials with the state Department of Law Enforcement said Monday.
Investigators with the FDLE, Gulf County Sheriff's Office and state Department of Health had been watching McDermid since February 2008, when someone tipped off the FDLE, alleging the nurse practitioner was writing illegal prescriptions.
Between January 2008 and this January, she wrote 29 prescriptions using the name and Drug Enforcement Administration number of an Orlandoarea physician "without his knowledge or consent," investigators charged.
McDermid's charges were third-degree felonies. She was booked into the Gulf County Jail, and the Department of Health placed her on administrative leave pending the outcome of the case.
McDermid was listed in state license records as a registered nurse practitioner, pediatric nurse practitioner and clinical social worker at the health department's clinic in Port St. Joe.
She was registered since 2003 and had no discipline records on file. The state last ran a criminal background check on her in June, and it came back clean.
The 14th Judicial Circuit of the State Attorney's Office is prosecuting.
