Throughout the recession and economic downturn, job-seekers have looked to the healthcare industry for potential hiring opportunities. However, a lack of industry experience can be a challenge to overcome during the job search process in this highly competitive market.
A recent New York Times report offers some hope for those of you seeking a career transition into a healthcare role, even if you have no experience in the industry.
The story offers several real-life examples of executives who had no healthcare industry experience and were hired from other industries, including a producer for ESPN who is now the Director of Corporate Strategy for a hospital. (In his case, he did go back to school for a Master?s Degree in a healthcare related field.)
Additionally, human resources and healthcare IT are featured as other areas that offer opportunities to transfer into healthcare. Hospitals in the story hired professionals from chemical companies, supermarket chains, and other various industries where there is little overlap.
Of course these healthcare "newbies" must be willing and able to learn the lingo, politics, and other unique issues of the healthcare industry.
