Three U.S. Nurses Receive 2009 Florence Nightingale Award

Three American nurses recently received the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal, a distinguished award that represents the highest international honor bestowed by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in nursing.
Presented every two years since 1920 by the ICRC, the Florence Nightingale Medal is awarded to nurses and volunteer aides who have demonstrated extraordinary courage to help the wounded, sick or disabled as well as civilian victims of armed conflict or disaster in times of war or peace.
Susan B. Hassmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, is one of the three U.S. nurses selected as the 2009 winners of the 42nd annual Florence Nightingale Medal. The other two recipients are Meredith Buck. RN,  Manager of Disaster Health Services with the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania, who was commended for being active in disaster situations and in the areas of public health and nursing education, and Diana Whaley, RN, American Red Cross Disaster Health Services Manager of the Knoxville (TN) Area Chapter, who is also active in disaster situations and in the areas of public health and nursing education.
"Dr. Susan Hassmiller is a long-time ANA member and exceptional nurse who truly exemplifies the best of the nursing profession," said ANA Chief Programs Officer Mary Jean Schumann, MSN, MBA, RN, CPNP. "ANA commends Dr. Hassmiller for her unwavering dedication, compassion and contributions on behalf of people in need. She is a true humanitarian and a national nurse leader in disaster preparedness."
Hassmiller recently served a six-year term as a member of the National Board of Governors for the American Red Cross, serving in the role of chair of the Disaster and Chapter Services Committee. As a volunteer for the organization since college, Hassmiller has been involved in Red Cross disaster relief efforts in the United States and abroad, including tornadoes in the Midwest, Hurricane Andrew, September 11th, the 2004 Florida hurricanes and Katrina, and the tsunami in Indonesia. She also serves as senior adviser to the organization on nursing and disaster programming, is the chair of the 9/11 Recovery Program and serves on the board of the Central New Jersey Red Cross. Hassmiller is currently a Senior Adviser for Nursing with the Robert Wood Foundation, where she leads the Foundation's strategies to address the nurse and nurse faculty shortages in an effort to create a higher quality of patient care in the United States.
Twenty-five other nurses from around the globe also received Florence Nightingale medals this year, bringing to the total number of recipients to 1,337.
