Grants will Help States, Hospitals Step Up H1N1 Flu Preparedness

The Department of Health and Human Services expects to award by July 31 $350 million in grants to help states and territories prepare for the 2009 H1N1 flu virus and seasonal flu this fall, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced today. She said the grants will help hospitals and health systems increase surge capacity, and state and local health departments to increase flu surveillance, reduce flu exposure and prepare for a potential vaccination campaign. Recently authorized by Congress, the funding includes $260 million in Public Health Emergency Response grants and $90 million in Hospital Preparedness grants. According to HHS, states will apply for the grants by July 24 through a streamlined process. States would then distribute the Hospital Preparedness grants to hospitals. Officials have not decided whether to move forward with an H1N1 flu vaccination campaign. However, they are planning for one and say a campaign could begin by mid-October if a safe and effective vaccine is available.
