Of the 19,000 jobs added in the healthcare industry in September, 15,000 of them were ambulatory jobs, (jobs in outpatient settings such as clinics and medical offices), according to the report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Although the national unemployment rate increased yet again, to 9.8 percent, the healthcare industry's job growth now totals 559,000 new jobs since the recession began, according to the BLS report. While promising news for the healthcare industry, job growth is considerably slower than it was in 2008, when an average of 30,000 jobs were added each month in healthcare. Healthcare's average monthly job growth for 2009 has been around 22,000 new jobs added each month.
One segment of healthcare job growth that is somewhat flat is hospital jobs, of which only about 4,000 were added in September, compared to 15,000 new ambulatory jobs.Healthcare Adds 19,000 Jobs in September, Hospital Job Growth SlowSource: www.about.com
