Working in an ambulance? Cross training from nurse to paramedic?

Hi, I'm a nursing student right now and I work in an emergency room as a tech. I'll stay at the ER after graduation, but I was wondering what it takes to cross train as a paramedic, if it's a whole lot of extra training, and if it's worth it. Any suggestions/ideas/insight?
