Becoming a doctor is possible in both fields, the difference as a psychiatrist they are a medical doctor and a psychologist could have a doctorate degree. The doctorate degree could be either a PhD or a PsyD; however, they are not licensed to practice medicine. Both will have their specializations relating to psychology and both have a specific type of psychology they prefer to utilize in their practice.
When children are the primary clients, they are referred to as child psychologist or child psychiatrist. They have taken courses designed for the treatment of children as well as the families involved in a Childs life. To be a psychiatrist requires a lot of education. Starting with a bachelors degree in science, another four years of medical school, an internship followed by residency. After all of the years of school is a state board examination which they must pass in order to be licensed. They are licensed to practice medicine.
They are medical doctors which mean they are entitled to prescribe medications. A psychologist, even with a doctorate degree cannot prescribe medications. Contrary to popular belief a psychiatrist will not generally write a prescription and send the patient away. They are still concerned with treating the problem for which the patient may need medications. As a general psychiatrist they will usually treat patients of all ages for a variety of mental illnesses.
For someone to say they want to get psychiatry jobs is not a simple process. This form of a medical career takes years of hard work, commitment and determination. These individuals are medical doctors and have studied side by side with the same individual doing surgery or repairing a broken bone, they simply chose to specialize in psychology.
