Critics of the changes have expressed fears that it will lead to more mistakes being made and therefore more lives lost. The Nursing and Midwifery Council are scheduled to stop carrying out the old style tests by this autumn after they were told that they could be sued for breaking EU laws if they were to continue.
The tests will still be in place for all non EU nursing applicants and therefore non EU nurses will still have to prove that their skills are up to the required standard. They will need to prove that they have taken part in an absolute minimum of 450 hours nursing in their own country within the past three years or that they have attended a three month training programme that has tested their knowledge and skill set.
It has now been discovered that over the past five years more than 40,000 applications have been made by EU nurses wishing to work in the UK. Startlingly only 270 of the applicants manages to complete the three month intensive workshop as others were put off by the difficulty factor as well as the financial burden.
This new law will echo the changes brought in for GP's a few years ago whereby an EU GP was enabled to work in an out of hours surgery without any testing of language grasp or skills needed.
The full effects of how the system has worked for GP's have been highlighted ever since Retired David Gray died after being given ten times the required dosage of diamorphine by an German GP working in an out of hours role two years ago.
There are a variety of nursing jobs on offer and if you are fairly well qualified or experienced, you may be able to get a job in private nursing.
