Why Diabetics Have Bigger Heart Risks

Diabetics are more than twice as likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack.

Research shows the disease is now responsible for one in 10 cardiovascular deaths - or 325,000 a year in all industrialized countries.

Dr Nadeem Sarwar, of Cambridge University, said: "Our findings highlight the need for better prevention of diabetes."

And the British Heart Foundation, who part-funded the international study of 700,000 people, said the findings showed just how serious diabetes was as a risk factor for heart disease.

More than 2.5million people in the UK have diabetes, which is becoming more common because of the obesity epidemic. About half a million who have the condition don't know it.

Cardiovascular disease is the world's biggest killer, responsible for about 17 million deaths every year.
