When patients have questions concerning a prescription, drug information, or any health concerns the technician has to refer to the pharmacist. The technicians can not answer these questions without the pharmacist being present. When a technician works in a retail pharmacy the responsibilities can depend on State rules and regulations.
A technician is allow to receive refill request and written prescriptions from the patients. Sometimes a prescription is phoned in or sent electronically. A technician is allow to handle these as well. Technicians verify information on prescriptions to make sure it is all complete and right. When preparing a prescription pharmacy technicians can count, pour, retrieve, weigh, mix, and measure medications as long as a pharmacist is around.
Preparing and placing labels on prescription bottles, along with finding the right bottle for the prescription is another job technicians do. The pharmacist will check the medication and labels after the technician has filed and priced the medication. Prescriptions can not be handed to a patient without the approval of the pharmacist.
Usually a pharmacy technician is the one that makes and maintains the patients profile, file insurance claims, and do inventory of the prescription medication. Sometimes the inventory has to include non prescription medications. When a technician works in a nursing home or hospital there are a few things more they are responsible for.
Reading the patients charts and preparing the correct prescription are just a couple of these added responsibilities. Once the pharmacist has checked that the prescription is correct it is then delivered to the patient. After the patient has taken the medication it has to be put into their profile.
The hours can vary for a technician depending on when the pharmacist works. The pharmacy technician works when the pharmacist does because they are not allowed to fill prescriptions with out help. It will also depend on where the technician works as to whether they will work nights, weekends, or holidays. A retail pharmacy usually have regular operating hours but a nursing home or hospital can have various work hours.
