Approximately ten years ago the hospitalist industry hit a boom. Many hospitals and physicians alike, choose to work with these medical professionals. With the reduction of doctor's salary because of the rising costs of health and medical care, many MDs have reduced their services. They have drastically lessened the amount of on-call and work hours. There for making this particular profession a growing field.
They are a gap that needed to be filled with doctors cut back on their services and hours. Hospitalist have been able to fill that void. They are in high demand and are often seen working with patients in the hospital's emergency room. When the patient's physician is not on call or is not available, then the hospitalist can step in and manage the care. When doing so, they must talk to the primary care physician and follow the protocol they select for their patient. It is essentially their job to be the middle man for the patient and their doctor.
The great advantage here is that the Hospitalists is oftentimes more familiar with the hospital, staff and its mode of operations. The hospital is the primary station for their particular practice and they know the routine and the patients involved.
Being on-site at a hospital allows the hospitalist to form relationships with their patients. This is not always the case with the hospital's MDs. The MDs will go on round sometimes not even knowing the names of the various patients.
Becoming a hospitalist requires a medical degree. Candidates must attend and complete medical school in order to receive their license. Upon finishing, they can move on to a specialty. The most popular being internal medicine. Other popular choices are family practice and pediatrics.
If they are members of an existing medical practice then they can work with that clientele at the practice's associate hospital. Or they may choose to work independently and assist several different practices. Physicians are always looking to reduce their workload and will turn to hospitalist for the very valuable added assistance.
Hospitalist jobs are becoming plentiful. The salary is very good and the hours are reasonable. This position is most visible in the emergency room, where patients first come in contact with a hospitalist. They are also mostly found during a patients hospital stay. It is a very important position as they are stepping in for the patient's medical doctor. Patients can help in the process by communicating any particular medications or treatments they are currently under. Or any special dietary needs. The hospitalist will also see to it that the patients receives any necessary extended care by a nurse or therapist.
