Is MS caused by Clogged Neck Veins?

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO - An Italian doctor who sparked intense worldwide interest after theorizing that MS could be triggered by blocked neck veins is sounding a cautionary note to patients desperate for a cure.

Dr. Paolo Zamboni told a meeting of neurologists in Toronto on Wednesday that any research into the condition known as CCSVI and a treatment he developed must be conducted under strict scientific guidelines.

That unproven treatment involves unblocking neck veins with balloon angioplasty - the same procedure used by cardiologists to unblock arteries feeding the heart.

A number of clinics in countries such as Poland have begun offering Zamboni's "liberation" treatment to MS patients from Canada and elsewhere for thousands of dollars.

Dr. Robert Zivadinov of the University of Buffalo is heading several studies to help determine what role, if any, blocked neck veins play in MS.

But he says MS patients should not be travelling to clinics for the treatment because it has not been scientifically proven to be either safe or effective.
