Joint Commission Seeks Comments on Proposed New Requirements

The Joint Commission is accepting comments through July 10 on proposed changes to its staffing effectiveness requirements for hospitals and long-term care organizations, citing complaints that the current requirement "does not significantly impact the quality and safety of care and consumes a substantial amount of resources." To address these concerns, it proposes two new "elements of performance" and seeks suggestions for alternative approaches to evaluating staffing effectiveness.
Also this week, the commission released for public review proposed new standards to advance effective communication, cultural competence and patient-centered care, which were developed with the help of an advisory panel whose members include Joseph Swedish, president of Michigan-based Trinity Health and chairman of the board for the AHA's Institute for Diversity in Health Management. Feedback on the proposed requirements, which could take effect as early as January 2011, will be accepted for six weeks.Source: AHA News Now
