Legal Issues Caregivers Face: How to Protect Yourself Caring for a Loved One

When I was a teenager, my mother was diagnosed with cancer of the brain and lungs. They gave her six months to live. I quit school to take care of my mom. My dad was fixing to retire in a few months. So I had no other choice but to stay home and take care of my mother. This was the first time I ever had to take care of a loved one. I felt cheated at that time. I had to do things that most nurses couldn't do. Then she became bed ridden. Which made things even more difficult. That meant I had to take care of her personal needs and feed her. That
?was a lot of responsibility for a teenager. Six months don't seem like much now. Back then it seem like forever. No child should ever go through what I went though. I loved my mother very much. I was very close to her. She was my best friend and I would take care of her a again if I could. When she died we thought it was over. Then it dawned on my father. She had no life insurance. He put all the insurance on himself not my mother. So he had to pay out of pocket for her funeral. My father always thought he would be the first to go. Don't let this happen to you! Today I take care of my mother in law. I am now 40 years old. My mother in law is now 80 years old. She has Alzheimer's and diabetes. I have taken care of her for 7 years so far. One of her nurses came to see her. I started talking to her. I asked her! How long do people with Alzheimer's usually live. She said that depends on there health. Then she said they can live a very long time. Then she turned around and said. That your mother in law could live another 10 years. I almost died. I started thinking that would be 17 years of my life.My question is what will we do in the event of her death? I have no income. My husband gets disability. My health is not the best. Then there is the possibility that I will soon have to take care of my father. Sure my mother in law is leaving us the house. But how are we going to pay for it? Sure get a job! Who is going to hire me with no reference's.Legal Issues Caregivers Face: How to Protect Yourself Caring for a Loved One
