Swine Flu Death Reported in Orange County

A 50-year-old Orange County woman has died from swine flu-related complications, county health officials reported today.

This brings to 15 the number of swine flu-related deaths reported to the Orange County Health Departments since the novel strain was identified in April 2009. Fourteen of the reported cases were Orange County residents. One case was a visitor to Orange County.

"Even though flu numbers have substantially decreased in our community we should continue to practice good hygiene measures," said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, director of the Orange County Health Department.

He said residents should continue to wash their hands frequently, stay home from work or school if they feel ill, and cover their mouths with a tissue or their sleeve if they are coughing.

While most cases of swine flu are mild, health officials say pre-existing medical conditions can play a role in how residents react to the flu. The majority of deaths from H1N1 flu in the United States have occurred in those with underlying chronic health conditions. Pregnant women, cancer patients, people with asthma, diabetes, suppressed immune systems, heart disease, and kidney disease need to pay particular attention to personal hygiene, avoid close contact to infected persons, and consult with their healthcare provider regarding the influenza vaccine.

Sherin said it is not too late to get vaccinated. The Orange County Health Department is still offering the H1N1 flu vaccine at its immunization clinics. For a list of health department and private provider locations with the vaccine, go to http://www.orchd.com.
