It takes twelve long years to become an obstetrician/gynecologist. High school students who even think they might want to become a doctor should study hard and get top grades. Learning to study well should be the main priority in high school. Taking a number of science and mathematics courses will give the student a good base for a medical career.
The first step in becoming a doctor is a four year bachelor of science program. There is no specific major required for entrance to med school, but there are specific classes such as anatomy, physics, genetics, biology and chemistry that are required. Some med schools have other class requirements as well, and it would be good to know ahead of time what the med school you plan on applying to requires.
It is common for premed students to have majors in chemistry, physics or biology. If a college has a pre-med major, students will take that, but most colleges don't have it. Med schools put more emphasis on the classes that are taken than on the major.
A high grade point average is extremely important for students who desire to enter med school. Med schools will not consider any students below a 3.5 grade point average, and they often choose students with averages of 3.7 or 3.8. This makes college very stressful for most of these students.
Medical school is another four years of schooling. In most of these schools the first two years are used for classroom studying and the student takes classes like microbiology, pathology and anatomy. These two years of school are extremely difficult, not because of the difficulty of the subjects, but because of the vast amount of material that must be learned.
The student does his last two years of med school in a hospital or clinic setting. During this time the student spends time working in the different hospital departments. In his last year, he will concentrate on selecting the department he enjoys the most for specialization.
The final step in preparing to become a doctor is a four year residency program. The student actually becomes a doctor when he finishes med school, but he must be licensed before he can practice on his own. Before that, he can only practice under the supervision of a licensed doctor.
It is a long, hard road to become an Katy OB GYN. It is worth it all, though, when the student has his license in his hand. This career has a tremendous outlook in the coming years, and it is a very lucrative occupation.
