How can a foreign nurse get employment in the UK?

Are there any nurses or health service managers out there who can tell me how an Italian nurse should go about getting a nursing job in the UK? She is a trained generalist and has some knowledge of English, but not a good working knowledge. Is there a linguistic competence exam? What is it like, and do you know of any special courses geared to meeting the linguistic competence requirements? How much do they cost? Is it possible to undertake linguistic training during probation? Do UK health sector employers recognise Italian nursing training and academic qualifications? How should she go about applying for a job? Don't worry if you can't answer the question fully - I'll hopefully build up a reasonably complete picture by piecing the answers together!
