legitimate private loans for school with bad credit?

I applied to a salliemae loan and was kinda approved ,but need a co-signer, I dont have a lot of family members, I'm a mother of 2 and have been trying to go to nursing school for a while. My husband and I have whats considered to much debt to ratio and have had financial problems which shows late payments on credit, we also have medical bills. What can we do, The nursing program is only 1 year, if I could just get the loan to start the monies would be return,nursing is a marketable career. some of the lenders, just will not give me a break, We have a home to, but of course we've had late payments, but I'm thinking if we were given a loan and we didn't pay it back we would lose our home so they have really nothing to risk, because we do have equity.
