Senate Finance Committee Approves Health Reform Bill

Senate Finance Committee Approves Health Reform Bill
Wednesday October 14, 2009
In a major victory for the White House and President Obama, the Senate Finance Committee voted yesterday to approve the health reform bill, according to The New York Times.

The vote of Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of Maine was the lone Republican vote that helped approve the bill, drafted by Senator Max Baucus, with a margin of 14-9.

The bill is missing two key components of the original proposals: a public insurance option, and a mandate for all employers to provide insurance. However, it does require medical insurers to provide non-discriminatory coverage regardless of pre-existing conditions, according to the New York Times report. Additionally, the bill requires employers to help reimburse the government for subsidies that help pay for employees' coverage, if the employer does not provide insurance coverage directly.

The bill now goes to the House and Senate floor for voting, and, while America is closer than ever before to health reform, the journey is far from over, as Obama stated in his speech yesterday.Senate Finance Committee Approves Health Reform BillSource: www.about.com
