As part of its "Hospital of the Future" series, HealthLeaders Media published an article today about the importance of hospital values and culture when hiring and maintaining top talent.
The article provides advice for hiring managers and hospital executives as to how to identify and nurture positive values within the facility. Additionally, an interesting point was made regarding different sub-cultures within the institution, such as the culture in the night staff versus that of the day staff, or amongst different departments.
The article states that, while hospitals may initially hire candidates for their skills and clinical qualifications, it is the value and culture within the hospital that keeps them there, the "glue that holds the team together".
What does this mean to you as a medical job seeker? Your medical job search and career are not solely about your skill set. Just because you have the right skills and certifications to meet the needs of the hospital, doesn't necessarily mean the culture is the right fit for you long term.
How do you determine if the culture and values of the potential employer and co-workers are a fit for you? Do your due diligence. Know your values, your "hot-buttons," and ask questions. How are certain patient situations handled? What is the patient satisfaction rate? What is the culture of the department? You may also want to ask other employees, in addition to the interviewer; try to meet other professionals who have long-term experience in the department where you are interested in working. If you are not able to meet others during the interview visit, try networking online to reach out to other employees of the hospital to obtain some feedback off the record. It is ideal to touch base with several people of varying roles and levels of experience, so you can identify trends, or rule out any isolated perspectives.
