Being a nurse used to mean you were underpaid, did menial task such as emptying bed pans, and getting a patient water. However most of these tasks have now gone to a nurses assistant and the registered nurse is in charge of more important task. Along with these new tasks came a better wage, a much better wage.
Becoming a registered nurse does require some effort, even though it can seem misleadingly simple, however the advantages far out weight the cost. You can become a registered nurse be completing all of the curriculum at one time. However, if you need to work and can't go to school full time, there is an alternative.
You will start out as a nurse's aide. After one and a half years of school, you can take the licensed vocational nurse exam, and upon passing the exam, you can begin to practice as a licensed vocational nurse. Once you are an LVN you can become a registered nurse with further education and another exam. Once you have passed your exam, you are ready to find work.
Looking for employment now is something to think about if you have not completed school. Many hospitals and clinics now offer on the job training due to the high demand for RN's. Being an employee you can go to class on company time. While you work there is the possibility to finish a portion your training, that is paid for by the hospital.
Of course, all facilities have different programs, so you will want to shop around some before making your decision. Many of these programs require you to make a committment to the company. The average committment is usually 2-3 years, but depending on the particular program it could be more or less, sometimes you will be required to stay with a company as long as eight years. Look at all of your alternatives, and then decide what works best for you.
